Angel Food Ministries

I had the opportunity to research a bit of Angel Food Ministries this past Sunday. "Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States."
Below an an example one of their menu items for April.
.
For $30 (enough to feed a family of 4 for a week - I think I could stretch this.)
1.5 lb New York Strip Steak (4 x 6 oz)
2 lb Chicken Breast Stir Fry (Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breast Chunks)
2 lb Breaded Breast Fillet
1 lb Steak Fajita Strips
20 oz Supreme Pizza
28 oz Jumbo Beef Patties with Gravy
1 lb All Meat Hot Dogs
10 oz Individually-Wrapped Cheese (16 slice)
1 lb Mixed Veggies
2 lb French Fries
12 ct. White Corn Tortillas
1 lb Rice
15 oz Peach Halves
6 oz Pancake Mix
32 oz 2% Shelf Stable Milk
Dozen Eggs
Dessert
.
All in all here is my assessment. They have some really great prices. There are two levels of ordering. There is the top of the menu (boxes) and the bottom of the menu (specials.) In order to order the specials (which appear to be the better price to me) you must order a box (which is VERY reasonably priced.) You have to decide how much you are putting toward your family's meals and how much this would help reduce the amount of money you are putting toward groceries. I think is is a great ministry, a great time saver, and has very reasonably priced items. What I really found neat was a $1 from each

If you have tried their boxes/specials before leave us a comment and tell us what you thought.

I LOVE Angel Food Ministries! I HAVE ordered these boxes before, and yes, the real value is in the specialty boxes. The regular box is pretty good, but know that the meats aren't going to be the best cuts of meat and may be a little fattier than what you would normally buy (I'm pretty picky). The specialty meat boxes are pretty good, and the produce box is very good...it's all definitely worth what you pay. And, if you go to help distribute, you leave in a great mood. :-)

We do this every now and then. Some of the food is really good. Now with the hotdogs, I do not really know what I'm eating and there is cartilidge in the all meat ones. The ribeye steaks are great, but u need time to cut off the fat (There's a lot) It definently helps out though. We love the fresh produce box where sometimes u get oranges, apples, pineapple, cantoloupe, potatoes, onions, celery, sweet potatoes, etc. You have to buy the standard box of food first in order to get other boxes which include senior meals which are lower in salt and already precooked, and other boxes of different foods. It is worth looking into!

I have purchased the box and the specialty meat (frozen popcorn chicken and other items) before. I felt there was a lot of product for the money, but I was not impressed with the quality. If I remember correctly they are under investigation and are thought not to be as transparent as they should (as a charity). I really like the concept and know it helps people in my area, however as long as I can afford higher quality (in my opinion) products I won't buy from them again.

My church uses them to distribute food to people. However the comments I heard is you are basically paying for the quality you get--not great. This is mostly surplus food.

I dont support this "ministry" at all... not sure if you have read the news but they have salaries of 2.1 million dollars a year and are facing lawsuits...

You might want to check out Great Food For All. I've tried both, and found that Great Food is much better quality. It's the same type of program, but isn't in as many states, though I hear that it's expanding. Go to www.greatfoodforall.com.

I liked them for some of the items & the price, but the more we ate the meats... the more disappointed we were. Especially since we had told lots of friends about it. We bought 2 boxes & stopped since we had SO MUCH meat. The strip steaks were good, but the chicken was not great... we're hoping to try some of the ribs this weekend.

When my husband, my best friend and her husband and I were all living together someone got us one for thanksgiving. It was a very nice gesture... but the food was not very good at all most of the meats were very fatty and you almost couldn't even eat them... so I would personally never buy them.

We purchased our first box last month and I was very impressed. The ribeye steaks were great and the hamburger meat cooked up with hardly any grease at all. I am placing my order this weekend for Aprils box. I heard the hotdogs were really good!

I absoutely love ANGEL FOOD MINISTRIES!!! You get tons of meats and vetables--MOST are great...some, not so great, but you get more than double the amount of food for the cost. My kids love it because they can cook their own meats, as they are frozen seperately. They have helped many I know in this tough time.

my parents do angel food ministries and sometime give us extra food they dont need. personally i dont think i would ever do it all the food seems to be bad quality to me.

The food is restaurant grade, not day old, dented, or second hand. I've purchased a few times and was pleased with what I got for my money. The meat boxes are a good deal and I can stretch the boxes to last longer than a week. If you are on a budget this is a good way to make your money stretch.

I have ordered the basic box once. You get a good amount of food for the money. I had the steaks and the hamburger patties and enjoyed them. I think this is something that is great for people on a very tight budget but if you are picky about your food or name brands this is not for you.

We tried this a few months and although some things were OK, overall the quality was poor. I know they call things 'steak' but that is really kind of stretching it. There were several items we couldn't even eat (the meatloaf was literally a gray mass that jiggled, but the gravy was good)I would like to find where that got that TINY 10 oz peanut butter to take on a trip, but otherwise, I really don't think the standard box is worth it.

Just be sure to check your local prices against the Angel Food prices. In our area, I can buy most of the April specials for nearly the same price or less at local groceries and Sam's Club and get a much higher quality meat. In the standard box, much of the meat is extremely low quality. Ribs are pretty much all bone and gristle, steak fajitas mostly gristle, boneless pork roast - if you take off the outer wrapper that holds it together you will find that it is not a roast but assorted scraps. In my opinion, much of the meat is questionable.

I organized AFM at my church for several years. The food can be good, if you watch the menu. The trick is in the food description, but you wouldn't know that unless you first received it on a regular basis. If you have health concerns, we eventually stopped the program b/c most of our orders came from seniors(lots w/ diabetes) and their doctors noticed the change.

My family has been enjoying Angel Food since Oct. of 2008, it has been a wonderful and delicious way to expand our food budget. We have had no problems with fatty meat or strange additions inside the hot dogs. The fruit and veggie box is fresh and delicious, that stays fresh much longer then what I buy at the grocery store. I enjoy going to my freezer and having everything there for my meal it takes a lot of the hastle out of meal preperation. I recommend Angel Food all the time. During these economic times it is the perfect way to eat cheap but at the same time know that it is nutritious.

Angel Food is a big help. For $30 you get a box of food worth about $60 and the menu varies each month. It’s not just for lower-income families – anyone and everyone qualifies to participate. It’s really a great system. Local Angel Food host sites are listed at http://www.angelfoodministries.com/hosts.asp.

This is a wonderful community outreach that our church has started recently. Don't know if anyone has commented yet, but they also take food stamps which makes it wonderful for those who have the need. There are only two in my family so I can stretch this for almost a month. The fruit and vegetables are wonderful. The senior meals are convenient for work lunches or for some of our shut-ins. And, if there is something non-perishable that I do not like, I just put it in one of our shut-in's boxes. Also, we help make reminder calls and distribute and deliver and the church gets $1 per box. All in all, everyone wins! Great ministry and cost savings!

Re: Angel food ministries.
They have recently added a "seafood" box as well as a box that is "allergan free." And, this month there is a "latin fruit and vegetable box."

I buy the basic box most months. The meat, especially the steaks are GREAT! You can buy a steak box on top of the basic box... every once in awhile we get some "off brand" food that is okay, for the price, I can not complain, OUR FAMILY LOVES ANGEL FOOD MINISTRIES, especially in this economy

I have been ordering from Angel Food since Sept of 2008. I have not been disappointed at all. Our meat is not fatty and I have been pleased with all the frozen vegs, muffin mixes, roll mixes, and more. By purchasing a Reg box and a grill box each month I have cut our monthly food bill by nearly $200. I will keep ordereing as long as it remains a good value for us.
