I have received a number of email about summer vacations and a need for cheap hotels, car rentals, and plane fares. While traveling cheap is not my area of expertise, I do have a few links to websites I used to find discounted hotels, car rentals, and plane fares. I hope this helps a bit.

In some parts of the country there is a road travel option which is comparable to a greyhound bus (some say it's even better) which is called megabus. The fares vary from week to week, but I've seen fares range as cheap as $12 or so for a commute from Indianapolis Indiana to Chicago Illinois.
If you're adventurous you can take megabus all the way from Indianapolis to Minneapolis Minnesota.
